Edith Pearl Grissom, my mother, said Great Grandma often went to see Joe Buck. I knew my Great grandfather and great grandmother. When I was young they lived in town in bootheel MO called Arbyrd. It had about 500 people and I thought most of them were related. They weren't except for a few people.
Arbyrd was a small town but it had a small theater that had matinees. We went to the movie and got popcorn with pop for around 15 cents. In the 1940s it had a grocery store, hardware store, furniture store and I think it had a clothing store. It was a busy little community. I think the cotton gin brought in most of the traffic and school clothes shopping. By the time I was a teenager people were going to Kennett to buy their clothes. By then we were living near Malden and we shopped there in the good years.
The grocery store had quite a character who always talked funny because he was chewing on a cigar. T-Roy Lomax, whose name was really Troy Lomax. What I remember most about his store was the roar of the fan. It sounded like a small airplace taking off. A steady loud drone. I didn't understand a word he said.
